How much liability coverage do you actually need?

Most people carry the limit they were sold years ago and have never checked it against what they own today. This works it out in about a minute. Nothing is submitted and nobody calls you.

Your coverage recommendation

Tell us a little about what you own and earn, and we'll show you the limits we'd actually put you at — and what an umbrella would add. Nothing here leaves your browser.

What we'd recommend

Each layer stands alone — they don't stack. One incident is covered by one policy, so each one needs its own limit.

The verdict

Why the number is bigger than you'd guess

People estimate their exposure by looking at their bank balance. A court doesn't. A judgment can reach your home equity, your savings, the vehicles you own outright, and your future paychecks — wages can be garnished for years after the fact.

That last part is what catches people. A twenty-eight-year-old with no assets and a good income still has a lot to lose, because the income itself is collectable.

Umbrella coverage is priced differently from the coverage underneath it, because it only pays once that policy has been exhausted — which is uncommon. Ask us what it would actually cost on your policies; most people are surprised, and we would rather show you the real number than a slogan.

This tool is a planning guideline, not legal or financial advice, and not a quote. It uses a common industry approach — assets plus several years of income — and does not account for Illinois homestead or retirement-account exemptions, trusts, business structures, or your specific circumstances. Actual limits available to you depend on carrier underwriting. Talk to us, and to your attorney or financial advisor, before relying on it.
